Mirjam Visscher obtained her Master’s Degree in Musicology, specialising in Medieval Studies, at Utrecht University in 2006. During her studies, she also followed oboe training at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. After working in data management, business intelligence, and IT project management, she returned to academia as a PhD candidate in Information and Computing Science at Utrecht University in 2021. Her research focuses on computational approaches to early music, investigating the evolution of modes and keys in Western music between 1450 and 1750.

During her PhD, Mirjam developed computational methods for large-scale analysis of historical music corpora, including audio-based pitch extraction, representative corpus construction, and the analysis of pitch-class profiles. She contributed to teaching in Information and Computing Sciences by delivering lectures, supervised bachelor’s and master’s students, and coordinated student tutors. She obtained her University Teaching Qualification (BKO) in 2023. During this period, she also served as a reviewer for the Transactions of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval and as a member of the programme committee of the Music Encoding Conference 2025.
