I will explore the potential of deep learning and machine learning models to map and monitor macrozoobenthos in intertidal systems under temperate and tropical conditions using remote sensing images. I will work at different spatiotemporal scales and provide a generalized model for systematic monitoring. I will expand the ability to capture surface patterns and obtain relevant predictor variables using Variational Auto Encoder CNNs. We develop the methods for the Dutch Wadden Sea and test the transferability on Barr Al Hikman, Oman, which has large pristine areas of characteristic tropical intertidal mudflats.
