Koos Kortland contributes as an educator/researcher emeritus within the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education to the following activities in the areas of education, research and development.
- The WND Conference on physics didactics - an annual two-day in-service teacher education conference for physics teachers in secondary education.
- Design research projects in the area of context-based science curricula (including learning in authentic practices and a problem-posing approach to teaching and learning).
- The High School Project on Astrophysics Research with Cosmics (HiSPARC) - a national project in which secondary schools and scientific research institutes co-operate in setting up an array of high-energy cosmic radiation detectors.
He is a member of the Executive Board of the Dutch Physics Didactics Committee (WND) and the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA), and editor of the Dutch Journal of Science Didactics.
- WND is the organiser of the annual WND Conference on Physics Didactics.
- ESERA is a European organisation for stimulating research in the area of science education aimed at improving educational practices in elementary, secondary and tertiary education.
