Josanne Verhagen is an assistant professor in virology at the division Infectious diseases and immunology of the Department of Biomedical Health Sciences of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. Her research focuses on avian influenza virus epidemiology, ecology and evolution. She aims for a broader understanding of factors that shape exposure and susceptibility to (avian influenza) virus infection and disease.

Research interests are influenza viruses, corona viruses, genetic and antigenic variation, host-pathogen interaction, virus-attachment, mucosal immunity
