Dr. Hans Anten was Assistant Professor of Modern Dutch Literature and professor Literary Studies at the institute COCMA. He studied Dutch Language and Literature at Utrecht University (cum laude). His research deals primarily with the cultural, poetical and literary history of movements in prose in the twentieth century. He has published widely on topics relating to that field of research. He is the author of Van realisme naar zakelijkheid. Proza-opvattingen tussen 1916 en 1932 (Reflex, 1982). This volume is one of the thousand key publications in the DBNL Basic Library (2007). He is the author of Het bekoorlijk vernis van de rede. Over poetica en proza van F. Bordewijk (Historische Uitgeverij, 1996). He contributed, for example, to the Liber Amicorum Traditie en vernieuwing. Opstellen aangeboden aan A.L. Sötemann (Veen, 1985), the book of literary history Nederlandse literatuur, een geschiedenis (Martinus Nijhoff, 1993), the Vestdijk-annual Het oog van de meester (Nijgh & Van Ditmar, 1998), the volume Neue Sachlichkeit and Avant-Garde (Avant-Garde Critical Studies 29; Brill, 2013). He is the co-editor of F. Bordewijk, Huis te huur. Elf surrealistische verhalen (Nijgh & Van Ditmar, 1999). He has contributed articles and reviews to, among others, Kritisch Lexicon van de Moderne Nederlandstalige Literatuur, Lexicon van Literaire Werken, De Nieuwe Taalgids, Tijdschrift voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde, Forum der Letteren, Spiegel der Letteren, Literatuur, Vooys and Nederlandse Letterkunde. In the last named journal he published the article ‘Bordewijk en de joden’ about the representation of Jewry in postwar literature and society. He is the co-editor of the volume Arthur van Schendel, Drie Hollandse romans. De waterman, Een Hollands drama, De grauwe vogels (Athenaeum Polak & Van Gennep, 2010). This scholarly reading edition in the famous Delta Series of three so called ‘Dutch Novels’ includes social, cultural, poetical and literary annotation and study of these historical novels.
