Decolonial NBS planning and futuring praxis 2023-2027 (PhD research)

• Janneke den Dekker's PhD research explores current planning practices for nature-based solutions (nature, biodiversity, and ecosystems). She interrogates the deeply entrenched narratives embedded in the planning of nature from a decolonial perspective. Her work ultimately answers the question of what narratives enable transformation for the future in Curaçao, Puerto Rico, and Barbados. 

Funding

• To realize all her PhD research, she secured funding from the Dean's Faculty of Geosciences (Mosiac) in 2022. 
• In 2025, she procured additional funding from the NATURA network for a 15-week fellowship for her research in Puerto Rico.

Island and Oceans Imaginaries

• Together with Danick Trouwloon and Cara Flores, Janneke organized a teach-in, panel, zine-making session to explore the question, ‘What can we learn about the ways Caribbean communities adapt and bring in culturally vibrant ways of knowing and being with the ocean?' on 31st May 2024. 
•  She and her co-organizers secured funding from Pathway's Sustainable Oceans (UU) and KITLV (Leiden University) to organize the workshop.
