Janneke den Dekker-Arlain MSc

PhD Candidate
Spatial Planning

Janneke den Dekker was awarded a Mosiac NWO PhD grant from the Faculty's dean of Utrecht University in 2022 for her research idea. Her PhD research will focus on the design, planning, and implementation of nature-based solutions in ways that promote social justice and tackle climate change simultaneously. She will do this by using scenario development as a tool, basing its application in a decolonial approach that is sensitive to ongoing colonial legacies and their impact on planning practice. Den Dekker, who comes from St.Lucia, draws from her personal and professional experience on climate adaptation and its impact on diasporic communities. Janneke is enthusiastic about contributing to making cities and urban areas more inclusive and ensuring justice-oriented applications of nature-based solutions through her research and collaborative projects.
