Johanna Hoorenman studied English Language and Culture at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and obtained her degree cum laude. She completed her PhD degree at Trinity College Dublin on American poetry under supervision of Professor Philip Coleman with a thesis titled Writing 'that Animal Darkness': Galway Kinnell, Gary Snyder, James Merrill. Following her return to the Netherlands, she taught at the Radboud University's American Studies programme until 2016, when she joined Utrecht University. She teaches in the BA programme English Language and Culture and the MA programme Literature Today. She is coordinator of Open Days, Matching and Tutoraat at the BA English Language and Culture. She publishes on American poetry and on American popular romance fiction. Her current project focuses on historical romance fiction set in the Viking era.
