Jennie Steyaert MSc

PhD Candidate
Geographical Hydrology

Jennie Steyaert completed her Bachelor's of Science in Biochemistry at Colorado State University. After graduation, she spent a year teaching Science, English and Mathematics in Pohnpei, FSM and worked on the Biennial Women's Conference. She then completed her Masters of Science in Hydrology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. Her Master's work focused on compiling a national dataset of historical reservoir operations and analyzing reservoir resilience to hydrologic drought. Her work at Utrecht University focuses on improving reservoir dynamics in PCR-GLOBWB, evaluating climate impacts on aquatic biodiversity and utilizing stakeholder information to develop a safe operating space for the Rhine basin in the SOS Water Project

Jennie is passionate about science communication and the science policy interface. In addition to her studies, she taught elementary students in Tucson about groundwater aquifers using sand tank and most recently teaches hydrology fieldwork to Bachelor's students at UU in France. She has also outreached with local organizations in Arizona to develop sustainable water managment plans that capitalize on hydrologic field measurements. She is also an Associate Editor for the Journal of Science Policy and Governance (JSPG) which supports early career scientists in publishing policy memos and briefs. Following her PhD at UU, she is excited to work with stakeholders and other experts to turn cutting edge research in hydrologic sustainability and resilience into science informed policies that an be implemented regionally and globally.
