Hans Lenstra investigates the molecular-genetic diversity of domestic animals as cattle, sheep, goats, water buffalo and horses. This is relevant for conservation purposes, but also gives many insights in the history of domestication. He collaborates with several European, Asian, Australian and American colleagues.

Since August 2014 he is Editor-in-Chief of Animal Genetics.
