Carlo Giordano works at the Utrecht’s University as Lecturer and teaches the following courses:  TV Italiaans 1 and 2 minor. His fields of interest are: second (and third, fourth …) language acquisition, teaching language in an interculturale perspective and the contemporary Italian literature. He collaborates also with other institutions involved in education and training such the University of Macerata, Università Cattolica Milan, and the school Edulingua, Marche, Italy (as teacher and representative of the school in Holland).

On April 4 2018 Carlo Giordano defended his PhD-thesis at the Università Cattolica of Milan with the title "La mitigazione nella prosa scientifico-accademica italiana e nella prospettiva dell'insegnamento dell'italiano LS" (Mitigation in the Italian scientific literature and from the perspective of Italian FL teaching). His research in pragmatics, textual linguistics and applied linguistics, analyzes mitigation strategies in a corpus of 25 Italian research articles within the field of arts and humanities and  helps  understanding  these phenomena within their context of action, by combining different approaches such as genre analysis, speech act theory, politeness theory, relevance theory and stylistics.  Specifically, this work tries to answer some questions regarding forms, functions and text domains of mitigation. Furthermore, this research explores three potential educational tracks that could profit from such a combined approach in  teaching Italian as L2, with a particular interest for the Dutch teaching context.
