Dr. Eva Schalbroeck

Eva Schalbroeck is a historian of colonialism and missionary activity in Central-Africa. In her doctoral thesis,she used the 'Commission for the Protection of the Natives' in the Belgian Congo as a lens to examine Church-state relations and colonial humanitarian governance. She is also interested in the immaterial afterlife of the colonial and missionary past. 

She studied at the KU Leuven and the University of Cambridge. Before joining Utrecht, she worked for Bestor (Belgian Science and Technology Online Resources), a science history platform. 

At Utrecht University, she is involved in courses on colonialism, world and modern history, and colonial memory and heritage. She also supervises theses on these topics. She is furthemore associated with The Decolonisation Group.
