Houvenaghel's Research Projects since PhD (defended 2001) can be grouped in two categories: 1.Exile and Migration, 2.Rewriting. 

1.Exile and Migration

Divided Identity (2001-2004 FWO): The postdoctoral project Divided Identity analyzes identity construction in essays by exiled Mexicans, such as Alfonso Reyes or Octavio Paz. Mexican Identity is divided by the co-existence of two civilizations, the indigenous and the Spanish, that never have really fused. Divided Identity focuses on the strategies used by the authors, distanced from their country of origin by (voluntary) exile, to cope with this hybrid identity.  

NEPANTLA (2009-2014 FWO): Together with Dagmar Vandebosch (KULeuven), Houvenaghel coordinates the project Nepantla, that analyzes identity construction in egodocuments by the second generation of Spanish exiles in Mexico. Nepantla maps the identities of the migrants' and refugees's descendants, who find themselves, as well as their parents, negotiating identities in between two or more different countries, languages, and cultures.

CROS (2015-today, Joint Research Project Ghent University and Free University of Brussels): The Research Group CROS (Crossing the Border between Spanish and English), founded in 2015 by Houvenaghel together with Renata Enghels (Ghent University) and Diana Castilleja (Free University of Brussels), analyzes code-switching and hybrid identity by Hispanic migrants in the US from an interdisciplinary perspective. CROS combines linguistic and literary insights in order to map these migrants' linguistic and cultural identity.

2.Myth Rewriting

Transatlantic Transformations (2005-2010 and 2010-2015, Special Research Fund Ghent University BOF): As a Research Professor of UGhent's Special Research Fund, Houvenaghel focuses in Transatlantic Transformations on rewritings of European literary models in Latin American literature. Transatlantic Transformations identifies the literary models, such as myths and literary genres (the Essay and the Historical Novel), that are transformed in Latin America. Transatlantic Transformations unravels the processes of transformation underpinning the Latin American rewritings and identifies the new cultural or socio-political function the European models attain in the Latin American context.

LyS (2014-today, Joint Research Project Université Lille 3-Ghent University): Together with Carole Viñals (Université Lille 3), Houvenaghel coordinates the Research Group LyS (Luz y Sombra) that concentrates on Gendered Myth Rewriting. LyS chronicles how ancient myths are rewritten for modern times through a gender lens. In the framework of mythocritics and intertextuality, LyS identifies the transformation processes underpinning the female retellings of myths. By comparing gendered myth rewritings across diferent nations, socio-political contexts, and cultures, LyS identifies the new gendered functions that those myths attain.

CRACK (2016-2019, Modern and Contemporary Literature Utrecht University): In collaboration with Héctor Jaime (North Carolina State University), Suzanne Hartwig (Universität Passau), Crack focuses on the rewriting European History by the Mexican Crack Writers Group. Crack identifies the new ethic significances that episodes of war, conflict, and genocide attain when rewritten through a Latin American lens. Crack unravels the processes of rewriting underpinning the ethics of the historical novels by the Mexican Crack Group.
