Dirk G. de Rooij received a Master degree in Biology at the University of Utrecht in 1965, and carried out his Ph.D. study at the Department of Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Utrecht. In 1969 he received his Ph.D. on a thesis entitled “Spermatogonial stem cell renewal in mouse, rat and Golden hamster”.

- Assistant Professor and subsequently Associate Professor at the Department of Cell Biology, Utrecht Medical Center Utrecht from 1969 up to 2002.

- Full Professor of Endocrinology at the Faculty of Biology, Utrecht University. From 2002 till mandatory retirement (65 years of age) in 2007

- Visiting Professor at the Genome Information Research Center, Institute of Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan from December 2006 till March 2007.

- Emeritus Professor from 2007 till 2009 at the Center for Reproductive Medicine, Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

- Associate Editor of “Biology of Reproduction” from July 2009 till July 2013

- Visiting Professor at University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018

- Visiting Scientist at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT, Cambridge, USA from 2009 - current.

Present research

Present research interests include:

- Human spermatogenesis

- Analysis of the spermatogenic defect in transgenic mice

- Role of retinoic acid in spermatogenesis
