Benjamin Hirschfeld MA

Lecturer
Cultural History

Since August 2022 I am a lecturer at the department for cultural history at the University of Utrecht.

In 2021-2022 I was a lecturer of modern history at the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). At the UvA I have taught, co-developed and supervised several Bachelor courses in modern history in both Dutch and English.

Presently, I am in the last stages of my PhD research at the Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam (DIA) in cooperation with the UvA/ASH. My dissertation focuses on the history of cooperation between cultural anthropologists and the military in the Netherlands and Germany since the early 19th century, with special attention on science history, ethics, public history and (post)colonial discourses. Prior to my move to the Netherlands, I co-created several international scientific networks and associations, and have organized many academic meetings, conferences and workshops around Europe, overall aiming at facilitating scientific and cultural exchange on an international and transdisciplinary level.
