Andries Meijerink geeft leiding aan een actieve onderzoeksgroep die werkzaam is op het gebied van luminescentie van anorganische vaste stoffen. Bij al zijn onderzoek is zowel de (chemische) synthese van de lichtgevende materialen als het meten (o.a. met laserspectroscopie) en modelleren van belang. Binnen zijn groep zijn twee onderzoekslijnen te onderscheiden:

Luminescentie van zeldzame aardionen. Dit onderzoek richt zich op het begrijpen van de energie-nivostructuur en luminescentie van zeldzame aardionen en het gebruiken van de verworven kennis voor bijv. efficiëntere verlichting, betere zonnecellen en snellere scintillatoren.

Optische spectroscopie van quantum dots. Quantum dots zijn nanokristallen van halfgeleiders die, door de kleine afmetingen, eigenschappen hebben die bepaald worden door de grootte van het nanokristal. Het onderzoek richt zich op het begrijpen van de grootte-afhankelijke eigenschappen en toepassing van quantum dots als lichtgevende labels voor bio-actieve moleculen.
