As an assistant professor Liberal Arts and Sciences, Sjang ten Hagen studies the history and philosophy of interdisciplinarity. He is mainly interested in the origins and transformations of disciplines in the humanities and the natural sciences, as well as in their mutual interactions.

In his teaching, Sjang focuses on equipping students with academic skills for interdisciplinary research, drawing on his multidisciplinary background in history, philosophy, and physics. He is also developing new courses and teaching modules that train students to reflect on interdisciplinarity from philosophical and historical perspectives.
