Structural Biology / NMR Spectroscopy
  • NMR is a non-invasive method that can provide structural information at the most detailed level in heterogeneous molecular systems
  • Our group develops and applies solid-state NMR methods that maximize spectroscopic sensitivity and allow for the analysis of such complex systems
  • By combining NMR with biochemical and biophysical approaches we aim at studying molecular structure and function in-situ and at atomic resolution
  • Applications range from drug carriers to large protein machines that execute their function when associated with specific cell compartments.


Our research is funded by National and international Research grants and has been awarded by international prizes, for example by  the Association of the European Biophysical Societies or by the International Council on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems (ICMRBS).

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) can provide atomic-level insight into the structure and dynamics of heterogeneous systems. Our group develops NMR-based approaches targeting such molecular arrangements by combining recent advancements in solid-state NMR to enhance spectroscopic sensitivity and resolution with dedicated biochemical and biophysical techniques. 

Our methods development ranges from NMR pulse schemes (see, e.g., our recent review) and hyperpolarization methods  to dedicated labelling and software analysis tools.

We have used such methods to study protein aggregation and fibril formation in the context of Alzheimer's and Parkison's disease. Moreover, we could elucidate the binding mode of ligands such as peptides, proteins and small molecules to complex molecular systems such as membrane embedded G-protein coupled receptors and ion channels or polymeric proteins related to bacterial secretion and the nuclear pore complex

Recently we used such concepts to study drug delivery systems at atomic level (see. e,g. Koers et al.). Moreover, we have shown how NMR can be used to obtain direct insight into how proteins execute their function in a cellular membrane environment (see. e,g.,  Vd Cruijsen et al.).

At presented we design novel NMR approaches to study structure and function of protein complexes that are associated in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (see, e.g., Renault et al.) and that are implicated in a variety of diseases including Alzheimer's disease, antibiotic resistance and cancer.
