Prof. Dr. Jasper Griffioen is specialised in environmental geochemistry and hydrology. He performs research to stimulate sustainable management of water resources and soil both in the Netherlands and abroad. In his research, he addresses the full suite of activities from 1. geochemical and hydrological monitoring of our environment, via 2. process-oriented field and modelling studies and 3. impact or risk analysis of anthropogenic activities on water and soil quality to 4. establishment of nature-based management solutions using geochemical engineering principles. Preferably, he combines field characterisation and assessment campaigns with modelling studies.

Jasper Griffioen also has a research position at TNO Geological Survey of the Netherlands where he is involved in all kind of projects on environmental management of the subsurface with increasing attention for the water-energy nexus: subsurface disposal of radioactive waste, risks of exploitation of oil and gas or geothermal reservoirs on water resources, aquifer thermal energy storage, geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of groundwater resources, sediment characterisation, natural and anthropogenic pollution of groundwater. He has performed many projects on the sediment geochemical characterization of the Netherlands, which has given him extensive insights in the sediment geochemical properties of delta areas. From all these activities, he has a good overview of new concepts in sustainable management of water quality and soil quality.
