Profiel

Jolle Demmers is Associate Professor and co-founder of the Centre for Conflict Studies. She lectures and writes on theories of contemporary violent conflict, the securitization of 'conflict diasporas' and on the interconnections between neoliberalism and identity conflict, network wars and urban militarism.

Demmers studied Political Science and International Relations at the University of Amsterdam and carried out her PhD research on neoliberal caciquismo and political violence in Mexico at the Department of Cultural Anthropology in Utrecht. Under the heading of Remote Interventionism, Jolle is currently engaged in research projects on new strategies of remote military and humanitarian governance and shadow warfare (with a focus on AFRICOM and armed drones). She is also directing the MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights.

Jolle has co-produced cross-disciplinary projects with BAK, Jonas Staal, De Balie, TAAK, We Are Here, Hacking Habitat, and the Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg on the intersections between art, politics and war (Stateless Democrcay, Azawad Embassy, Remote Control, New World Summit, The Ultra-perifery).

The revised and updated Second Edition of  her book Theories of Violent Conflict (Routledge, 2017) appeared this Summer, with new material on violence, religion, extremism, military urbanism and critical political economy.
