Profiel

Biologische membranen zijn essentieel voor alle levensprocessen. Het onderzoek richt zich vooral op het op moleculair niveau begrijpen van structuur, organisatie en eigenschappen van membranen. Hiernaast vindt meer toegepast onderzoek plaats, o.a. aan de werking van membraanactieve stoffen (antibiotica en toxines), de rol van membranen in myloidegerelateerde ziekten (type II diabetes, Alzheimer) en de ontwikkeling van nieuwe antibiotica en antivirale middelen.

Het onderzoek is multidisciplinair en omvat een grote diversiteit aan methoden, variërend van moleculair biologische benaderingen tot geavanceerde biofysische technieken, vaak in combinatie met chemisch biologische technieken. De te onderzoeken systemen variëren van intacte celmembranen tot artificiele, synthetische model membranen.

Curriculum vitae

Antoinette Killian studied chemistry at Utrecht University, where she graduated in 1986 on biophysical studies of model membrane systems (promotor prof. dr. Ben de Kruijff). Supported by an NWO stipend, she performed post-doctoral research with prof. Dan W. Urry (University of Birmingham, Alabama) and with prof. Tim Cross (Florida State University). She then returned to Utrecht University, where she obtained a faculty position at the research group Biochemistry of Membranes. In 1993 she spent a sabbatical with prof. Goran Lindblom (Umeå, Sweden). She was awarded the FEBS (Federation of European Biochemical Societies) prize for her work on peptide/lipid interactions in 1995 and in the same year she received an honorary doctorate degree at Umeå University. In 2002 she was appointed full professor at Utrecht University, where she now heads the research group Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics. She has (co)-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications.

It is the third part of the Secretum de thesauro experimentorum ymaginationis hominum by Johannes (or Giovanni) Fontana (ca. 1390--ca. 1455), who was born in Venice and studied in Padua. The text exists in a unique manuscript in Paris, where it is written in a simple code in which each Latin letter is represented by its own symbol. In the Tractatus de instrumentis artis memorie, Fontana describes twelve simple instruments which can be used as memory aids. For each instrument, the manuscript provides a figure which is photographically reproduced in the book under review. For example, Fontana's first instrument is called the speculum (mirror); it consists of five concentric rings which can be rotated around a central axis. On each of the rings, the letters of the alphabet are inscribed in order. Fontana suggests that an arbitrary combination of five letters (such as XROTA) can be remembered by turning the rings such that the letters X, R, O, T, A are on the radius of the instrument from the central axis to the left side..

The European Union selected the most innovative doctoral programmes in Europe for funding in the prestigious Marie-Curie Initial Training Networks scheme. ManiFold was the only Innovative Doctoral Programme in the Life Sciences funded in 2012.
