My current research focuses on urban development in Africa and Latin America. In continuation of my Ph.D. research on transnational property investment by lifestyle migrants and private developers in Costa Rica (finished in 2012 - see description below), my current research focuses on land governance and land rights in (sub)urban settings, citizen initiatives and urban governance, and private sector investment in urban development, in selected African (e.g. Kenya, Ethiopia) and Latin American (e.g. Mexico) contexts. As such, I also continue to engage with themes such as transnational mobilities, urban fragmentation and socio-spatial segregation. In addition, I supervise(d) PhDs on topics such as land governance and climate change adaptation in various contexts. In 2016 I was a visiting professor at UNAM, Mexico on an AMEXCID grant.
