Angelo (he/him/his) studied Economics and Quantitative Methods at the University of Pisa (Italy), and completed his Ph.D. in Social Statistics (Multivariate Small Area Estimation) at the University of Manchester (UK); this was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) - UKRI where he was principal investigator. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in the Higher Education (PgCert - UK Master's level training). 

He is currently the principal investigator of SAESDGs-EU - ‘Small Area Estimation Methods to Monitor the Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals at the Subnational Level in the European Union’, funded by the European Research Council (5 years project ERC StG - 2026-2030 EUR 1.5 million).

He is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a fellow of the International Association of Survey Statisticians, Italian Statistical Society and European Survey Research Association (ESRA). He is part of the ESRA board since July 2023, where he serves as Conference Chair for 2025-2027.

He is honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Social Statistics of the University of Manchester. 

Angelo works as an Assistant Professor in Statistics at the department of Methodology and Statistics at Utrecht University, where he specialises in survey statistics, in particular

  • small area estimation under a wide range of approaches
  • data integration (statistical matching and record linkage)
  • the use of new forms of data in statistical inference. 

He enjoys working interdisciplinary and his areas of application are 

  • poverty and social exclusion 
  • attitudes towards minorities with a special focus on LGBTIQ+ communities.

He regularly offers consultations to public and private organisations on survey statistics and methodology.
