Peter Schrijver studied Classical Philology, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics and Caucasian Linguistics at the University of Leiden, where obtained his PhD. in 1991, with a dissertation entitled The Reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European Laryngeals in Latin (Amsterdam-Atlanta: Rodopi). In the ensuing years, he did postdoctoral research on the history of the Celtic languages as a fellow of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen. In 1999, he became chair (ordinarius) of linguistics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München., where he was also vice-dean. Since 2005, he holds the chair of Celtic languages and culture at Utrecht University. He was director of undergraduate studies for languages and cultures from 2007 to 2014, and from 2015 to 2020 he was vice-dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He is currently head of the department TLC (Languages, Literature and Communication).
