Muriel Hagenaars is associate professor at the Clinical Psychology department of Utrecht University. She received her PhD at Radboud University Nijmegen on research addressing the role of dissociation in the aetiology of PTSD. She continued doing research on PTSD and intrusion development, using experimental methods mostly (e.g., the trauma film paradigm). In 2010 she got a VENI grant for research on the role of freezing in the development of emotional memories, with a focus on cognitive factors. She further developed this line of research during a NIAS fellowship (KNAW) in 2017, combining neuroscience with animal research and clinical implementations. She is increasingly often using Data Science with the aim to improve clinical practice. Next to her work at the UU, Muriel Hagenaars is consulting the police in difficult cases as a member of the LEBZ. She also works part-time at the Center for Psychotherapy.
