Dr. Jo Nelissen is a senior researcher of the Freudenthal Institute SME, Utrecht, the Netherlands. His research focuses on thought processes in realistic mathematics instruction, especially for children with learning disabilities. He wrote a thesis about the connection between reflection, mathematization and problem solving. One of the conclusions was that interactive teaching and learning encourages reflective thinking (metacognition). Another area of interest is an effective teaching approach for highly gifted children.
