Kees Koonings has been the co-ordinator of the master of science program Latin American and Caribbean Studies from 2004-2014. (This master program is currently not offered.) In this program, he taught on the historical and contemporary social and political development of Latin America, on armed actors, violence and fear, and on multiculturalism and ethnicity.

In the CASTOR research master he teaches on armed conflict, collective violence, and conflict transformation

In addition, he supervises master research and thesis projects on a variety of topics in Latin America and elsewhere.

In the bachelor degree program “Anthropology”, he teaches on development studies and urban violence in Latin America. He has been supervising a large number of bachelor research and thesis projects, especially in Guatemala and elsewhere in Latin America. Since 2001, he has been teaching a course on “democracy and citizenship in Brazil” within the course program of CEDLA Amsterdam. Since 2011, het teaches on various subjects related to the history, development and politics of Brazil in the master programs of CEDLA and International Development Studies of the University of Amsterdam.

He has been co-supervising a substantial number of PhD projects related to conflict and violence, urban politics, policing and insecurity, and post-conflict reconstruction in Latin America, Africa and Southern Asia.
