In 2014 Oscar Gelderblom was appointed full professor of Financial History at Utrecht University, the institution from which he also received his PhD degree in 2000. His dissertation Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden en de opkomst van de Amsterdamse stapelmarkt, 1580-1630 was published in 2000. In 2009 Oscar edited a volume on the Political Economy of the Dutch Republic and in 2013 he published Cities of Commerce. The Institutional Foundations of International Trade in the Low Countries, 1250-1650 (2013), in which he develops a model of institutional change in European commerce based on urban rivalry. Together with Joost Jonker and others Oscar has also published extensively on the financial history of the Netherlands before the Industrial Revolution.
