Research

The Utrecht University Centre for Medieval Studies (UUCMS), founded in 2000, coordinates the manifold research initiatives developed by the medievalists working at Utrecht University. UUCMS furthers communication with other medievalists in the Netherlands and abroad.

Research into the Middle Ages covers a period of more than ten centuries that is linked to the present in a huge variety of ways via the intervening period of five centuries. Medieval Studies specialists at Utrecht University study the people who lived in Europe between 500 and 1500, their ideas, and the traces of their lives and thoughts they left behind in texts, art, and music. An important focus of research is their languages (Latin and the vernacular languages) and the manuscripts in which their writings have been passed down.
