Institute of Environmental Biology

The Institute of Environmental Biology (IEB) is a major research institute of the Faculty of Science of the Utrecht University. It forms an international centre of excellence on functional plant studies in relation to biodiversity and global change by performing biological research of high quality at various levels of integration and at a large variety of spatial and temporal scales. The IEB’s aim is to understand the interaction between plants and their biotic and abiotic environment, and to identify and assess the effects and consequences of environmental change on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

International centre of excellence

The Institute of Environmental Biology hosts over 100 plant scientist. Together, they cover a broad range of fundamental plant biological disciplines ranging from the ecosystem, population and plant level to the cellular and molecular level. The IEB collaborates with other top research institutes all over the world, resulting in important joint publications in leading journals. It is the IEB’s ambition to further develop national and international leadership in integrated biological studies of plants, environmental signaling and ecosystem functioning, and to create a stimulating, competitive environment for talented young scientist.
