Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS)

The Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) is a nationally and internationally renowned research institute. NILOS - established in 1984 - operates within Utrecht University in the framework of the department of Public International, Social and Economic Law (ISEP), Utrecht University School of Law, as well as within the Centre for Environmental Policy and Law (CELP)/NILOS.

Basic aims:

• to develop and sustain expertise on all issues related to the law of the sea;
• to enhance and broaden awareness and knowledge of the law of the sea;
• to assist states - in particular developing states -, intergovernmental organisations, national and international non-governmental organisations, companies and individuals in dealing with law of the sea issues.

Core activities:

• individual and joint research projects;
• teaching and training;
• legal advice and assistance.
