Research

Focus areas

Utrecht University has organised its top-level research into 15 focus areas. These multidisciplinary research themes bring together extremely high-quality research that has proven its worth, combining it thematically. The research from the faculty concentrates on 2 focus area's: 'Earth and sustainability' and 'Coordinating societal change'.

Earth, sustainability and human actions

The prominent research theme at the Faculty of Geosciences is the system of the Earth in change and under stress. We also examine the consequences of human actions. Our research focuses on the interior of the Earth, on the Earth’s surface, on the environment and climate, on urbanisation, and on sustainability and innovation. In addition, the faculty has a long tradition in the field of (historical) cartography.

Prominent, leading research

The research conducted in the faculty is prominent and represents excellent quality. International review boards recently assessed the research as ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’. The research concentrates on two focus areas: ‘Earth and sustainability’ and ‘Coordinating societal change’.
