IT Community

As a professional community, we need to achieve a balance between constant reliability and agile innovation.

It is our aim to create a professional IT community that allows students, employees, and teaching and research staff to perform to the best of their abilities. We aspire to be an open organisation that benefits from all of the expertise present in its community.

With one-third of Utrecht University’s IT experts working "in the field" at individual faculties, departments and other domains, regular interaction and close collaboration is of great importance. It is this that ensures we can continuously strengthen our customer-oriented approach and guarantee professional maintenance and innovation.

As a professional community, we need to achieve a balance between constant reliability and agile innovation. Together with local IT staff, the central ITS organisation responds to IT needs within the individual faculties, but we also proactively introduce new applications and tools.

Interaction between central and local IT staff is actively promoted. Every month, for example, we hold informal meetings for all IT members, in which presentations on current projects ensure that everyone is kept well informed about the wide variety of IT activities taking place throughout the university.

Utrecht University IT is also part of a larger IT community. We interact closely with the SURF collective (an IT-related cooperative organisation) and are members of the Utrecht IT Circle. Within these groups, we exchange our experiences with IT tooling and services of all kinds. The IT Circle also offers our IT specialists the opportunity to visit colleagues at other institutions and find best practices.

Our organisation needs to be agile and able to follow fast scientific and technological developments. By sharing knowledge and best practices with our internal and external networks, we can benefit both our own and other IT communities – and Utrecht University as a whole.
