Career prospects

On this page you will find information about possible career prospects for both academic and non-academic careers. As a graduate from the Sustainable Business and Innovation programme, you are trained to become a sustainability change agent in commercial organisations, industries, NGOs, and government bodies. You may also want to continue with research at a university.

Academic careers

This Master’s programme prepares you for a career that can be focused on research and several Sustainable Business and Innovation graduates have found a job as a PhD student. After your studies, you are well placed to pursue a PhD in the field of Corporate Sustainability.

Non-academic careers

As a graduate with the knowledge and skills to develop sustainable business practices, you will have excellent career prospects across multiple sectors and industries. If you would like to become a sustainability change agent in positions such as sustainability officer or sustainability director in a business, government agency, or other organisation, this programme offers you the perfect preparation.

You will have the perfect training to work in firms that are interested in changing their business strategy to a more sustainable direction. Sustainable Business and Innovation graduates have found jobs like Product Manager, Coordinator Sustainability, Trainer/Coach and Trainee.

Career development

Academic and professional knowledge and skills

This Master’s programme is set up to guide you in the best possible way with your career search. By offering first theoretical knowledge mixed with real life examples by guest lecturers followed by an increasing amount of time spend in and for companies applying the knowledge, you get hands on experience. This experience helps you to explore the different challenges organisations and sectors face while transforming towards sustainable innovation and production as well as it will give you your first topics for your own CV.
On completion of the Master, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate substantial knowledge of sustainability and businesses;
  • select and apply corporate sustainability tools and initiatives for making business more sustainable;
  • demonstrate knowledge of business and sustainability practices;
  • benefit from work-based experience; and
  • demonstrate major business sustainability skills.

Career services

UU Career Services

UU Career Services offers training related to career orientation and job application skills; examples include writing an application letter and CV and conducting a job interview. UU Careers Day

Once a year Utrecht University organises a Careers Day. The Careers Day offers the opportunity to sign up for workshops and trainings, and to meet recruiters at the careers fair. It’s also possible to join a job application training or have your resume checked.
