Study programme

The Research project is the most important part of your studies. During this 9 months internship you will be part of a research team, practicing all aspects of research: from designing, planning and conducting experiments, to collecting and interpreting data, drawing conclusions, and writing a report or a scientific publication.

It is important that your Research project fits within your area of expertise and takes place within Utrecht University or UMC Utrecht.

The first year also entails a small course part consisting of 2 compulsory introduction courses and a programme related courses that should be linked to your research project. See the course list below for more information.

This compulsory module is a combination of courses, workshops, seminars, and career events to acquaint you with a wide range of life sciences-related topics.

The second year starts off with an intensive half year of course work on business related topics (FBE). See the courses list below for detailed course descriptions and options. 

Subsequent to the FBE course in year two, students of the master Science and Business Management will do an Business Internship of at least five months at a company or organisation outside the university. The internship must be business related and preferably have a link to science. There should be a clear assignment, on which the student will work independently under the guidance of a host supervisor and UU examiner. Typical examples are doing a market research for a chemical company, carrying out a feasibility study at a life sciences consultancy firm or writing a business plan for a biotech start-up. The internship may include practical work like constructing a marketing database or designing a risk prevention system.
