Why are some countries rich and others poor? How can subsidies and taxes help reduce pollution? Why do people start a business? And how can we make health care affordable? These are just examples of some of the questions we will address during the English-language Bachelor’s degree programme in Economics and Business Economics. The programme teaches you how economists think and how you can study current issues in businesses and society as effectively as possible. We approach our subjects from the real-world perspective, meaning that you not only work with abstract models and theories, but also apply them in a context relevant to actual society.

Our students will answer all your questions!

Broad view

In the programme you take a broad view of challenging economic issues: the real-world perspective. What are the needs and objectives of people and organisations in our complex society? What choices do they make in order to fulfil those needs and achieve those objectives? To find answers to these questions, we analyse economic issues using insights drawn from other fields such as Geography, Law, Social Sciences and Applied Data Science. You have the opportunity to design your own personal study programme as 50 percent of the Economics and Business Economics programme is made up of optional components. This results in a unique professional profile tailored to your wishes and interests.

International learning environment

Your insights will be enriched by the international learning environment offered by Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.). Our students come from more than 20 different countries. Therefore this programme crosses multiple borders: linguistic, geographical and disciplinary.

U.S.E. gives you a lot of freedom in forming your curriculum by yourself and focusing on real-world issues that you find important and necessary to study more about.
