Research

The Department of Animals in Science and Society participates in the faculty research programme Behaviour and Welfare.

Mission statement

The primary goal of our research is to better understand how the emotional and cognitive processes occur in animals, and how these processes contribute to the animal’s ability to adapt to its environment. We are convinced that concepts of animal welfare should be biologically grounded and closely related to the animal’s adaptive capacity and its perception of its internal state. Animal welfare concepts must be robust, in that they should apply regardless of the context in which the animal is kept by humans.
