BINF Fund

Theoretical (model-based) research into fundamental questions in β-sciences is eligible. Special preference is given to research into informational processes in biotic systems, i.e. bioinformatics in the broad sense as defined by Hogeweg and Hesper (1970), see entry Bioinformatics in the Oxford English dictionary and the Roots of Bioinformatics in the Theoretical Biology (PLOS comp Biol 2011). In exceptional cases, experimental β-research or historical research may also be considered. In all cases, the motto 'scientifically relevant and socially irrelevant research' must be met.

The objective is pursued by providing a financial contribution to research, in particular for doctoral and post-doc fellowships. Support for Master's students is also eligible.  Due to limited resources, research will often involve interim funding. Funding for research abroad is also possible. Funding is intended for direct personnel costs and equipment specifically needed for the research or (travel) costs to be incurred. Overhead costs are not provided.

Also:

• Applications must be submitted in writing to the Utrecht University Fund, addressed to the board and stating 'Application BINF Fund'.
• The application must consist of a motivation letter (including own and other financing possibilities) and a specific work plan in relation to the requested support.
• Applications can be submitted continuously and will be granted or rejected within three months after receipt.
• In the event of a grant, all publications about the research or study programme, which will be wholly or partly funded by the fund, must state "This research/project was (partly) made possible by the BINF fund of the Utrecht University Fund".
