NWO Vici grant for Arwen Deuss

Imaging the deep Earth

Five excellent scientists from Utrecht University have received a Vici grant of 1.5 million euros from NWO. The funding will enable the laureates to do research for the next five years and to build up their own research group. One of the researchers is seismologist Dr Arwen Deuss, who already received an ERC grant of 2 million euro's prior to this.

Large earthquakes cause the Earth to sound like a bell. As a seismologist Deuss uses these vibrations to make images of the deep structure of the Earth. Using this information she investigates how deep tectonic movements bring water into the Earth and whether molten material is found at the core-mantle boundary. For this unique view Deuss already received an ERC grant earlier this year.
