MiningImpact-3 Stakeholder Workshop

to

We invite stakeholders, including  government and ISA representatives, policymakers, contractors and industry, NGOs, and social and legal scientists to join us at a workshop for co-designing the proposal for the 3rd phase of the MiningImpact project. The workshop will be hosted as a hybrid event, so anyone with an interest in the latest developments regarding deep-sea mining is welcome to join online.

“MiningImpact” is a leading international research project investigating the environmental impacts of future deep-sea mining. Since its start in 2015, MiningImpact has delivered independent scientific research outputs and significantly improved our knowledge on polymetallic nodule ecosystems and potential mining impacts (https://miningimpact.geomar.de).

For the JPIOceans Joint Call “Ecological impacts of deep-sea mining 2023”, we propose the third phase of the MiningImpact project, where we aim at closing identified knowledge gaps and furthering the understanding of the ecosystems associated with polymetallic nodules and seafloor massive sulphides and their vulnerability and resilience to mining in order to provide national and international authorities with the scientific basis and sound recommendations for effective regulatory frameworks. In addition, weaim to extend and improve our stakeholder dialogue in order to enhance transparency with respect to scientific results and to address societal concerns that are being raised about future deep-sea mining activities.

The main focus of this workshop is on stakeholder input. We will commence with an introduction of the expected environmental impacts of deep-sea mining and an outline of the proposed project. Subsequently, stakeholders are invited to discuss and provide feedback on the project’s scope and workplan. The goal of this workshop is to adapt and improve our project proposal, identify and fill potential gaps, and to improve interaction with diverse stakeholder groups.
