Biography
My name is Malin Grundel and I have been living in Utrecht for six years. I am born and raised in the middle of Rotterdam, which is a vibrant and colourful city in the Netherlands. First, I started studying Language and Culture Studies at the Faculty of Humanities. After three months, I found myself being more interested in social issues within the society surrounding me than in learning a language from abroad. There are problems that need to be solved and somehow I feel responsible to contribute to the solution. I changed my study program into Interdisciplinary Social Science and felt immediately in the right place. During my bachelor I learned a lot of interesting perspectives on social and behavioural problems. Statistics, of course, was a struggle but when I manage I do like it. To further develop my research skills, I took additional courses in methods and techniques. I discovered how much I liked to do be in the field and interviewing people and, at the same time, disliked the analyses of qualitative data. I prefer analyzing quantitave data which is puzzling, and even today I still get only a small piece of the puzzle, but it challenges me to keep looking for the solution. My social interests, together with my love-hate relation with statistics led me to the research master Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism. Now I have finished my first year I can say it is a tough program but I do not have any regrets. I got a little bit closer to the solution, although I am aware of the fact that I can not solve everything.
