Chair
Integrated assessment of global environmental change
Date of appointment 01.08.2011
Profile

Managing global environmental problems and moving towards a more sustainable development in general represent key challenges for the 21st century. Integrated assessment modeling forms an important tool to support policy making by allowing to explore different possible futures with respect to socio-economic development and associated impacts for the global environment. The model can do this by studying the complex interactions between drivers, environmental impacts and human development goals, but also by showing the relationships across scale and between short-term decisions and long-term consequences. The key objective here is describe the relevant systems as best as we can. For this, it is necessary to integrate information of different scientific disciplines and put it in the context of decision-making processes.

I am very motivated in improving decision-making processes by providing relevant information by applying IAMs for scenario analysis, participate in assessment processes, but also to further develop these models. I strongly believe that PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and Utrecht University can work together in this area. The description below provides some more details about me and my work.

Detlef van Vuuren (1970) is professor in Integrated Assessment of Global Environmental Change at the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University and senior researcher at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency leading the IMAGE integrated assessment modeling team.  He has published more than 240 articles in refereed journals including Nature, Science, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy, Nature Geosciences, PNAS, and Environmental Research Letters. He is listed among the most highly cited researchers worldwide.

He participates in various research organizations in the field of environmental research. He is member of the board of the Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium (IAMC), the Working Group on Coupled Models of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the Global Carbon Project and member of the steering board of ISIMIP. He participates in the editorial board of Climatic Change, Earth System Dynamics and Global Environmental Change.

Detlef van Vuuren has been active in various research projects and assessments. He had a coordinating role in the development of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) now used in the IPCC’s assessments. Detlef van Vuuren has participated as (Coordinating) Lead Author in various assessments such the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook, the International Assessment on Agricultural Science and Technology Development, and the OECD Environmental Outlook. Detlef van Vuuren has also a member of the scientific boards of several DG Research projects.
