Chair
Experimental Developmental Psychopathology
Date of appointment 01.01.2007
Profile
Our experimental developmental psychopathology group focusses on the development of social behavior. Emphasizing the need for developmental psychology to move from correlational and descriptive findings to causal explanations of development, we focus on (longitudinal) experimental designs to unravel causal mechanisms driving differential development.
To this end we follow two intertwined lines of research:

1) In the experimental research line, we use experimental procedures to study the exact causal mechanisms involved in the initiation and maintenance of behavior problems. For example, we use rigged play sessions and internet games to test the effects of social stimuli on social cognitions and behavior. By doing so, we hope to find out exactly how and why specific behavior patterns are triggered and maintained.
2) We use the knowledge gained in experimental research to improve interventions and to conduct randomized trials of their effectiveness to reduce disruptive behavior problems, with the secondary aim to study mediation processes through intervention. Current intervention studies include parent management training (e.g. Incredible Years) and social-cognitive interventions (e.g. PATHS, Kanjertraining).
