Zaid Ramdhan Anshari is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Utrecht University, working at the intersection of the Divisions of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics within the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS). As a postdoctoral researcher, he conducts independent research while contributing to collaborative, interdisciplinary projects bridging fundamental science and biomedical applications.
His research focuses on the development of synthetic cells for artificial kidney applications. This involves engineering lipid membrane-based systems, such as liposomes, that incorporate functional transmembrane transport proteins to mimic the toxin-removal function of kidney tubules. A key part of this work includes developing protein-based sensors for intracellular toxin detection and integrating synthetic cells onto dialysis membranes as a first step toward prototype development. This project is embedded in a broader consortium involving experts in liposome technology, cell-free protein production, clinical nephrology, and medical decision-making.
Zaid brings extensive expertise in membrane protein biochemistry, synthetic cell engineering, and biophysical techniques, developed during his PhD at the Membrane Enzymology group, University of Groningen. His work has been published in journals including Nature Communications and PNAS.
