Yoshihide Wada is a senior research associate at the Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He is also Deputry Director of Water program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). In 2013, he obtained PhD in Cum Laude at Utrecht Univesity. His projects include estimating global water use and water availability by using the global hydrological model PCR-GLOBWB. His work also includes estimating and projecting global water scarcity, and the sustainability of global groundwater resources. He is now working on global food and water security under socio-economic, and climate change, and water scarcity.


About 30% of the global population currently lives with water stress, that is, in basins where more than 40% of the available water is withdrawn. This fraction may increase up to about 50% by the end of the century. We present six strategies, or water-stress wedges, that collectively lead to a reduction in the population affected by water stress by 2050, despite an increasing population. For simplicity, the water-stress wedges are shown here as linear implementations, although the proposed efforts are unlikely to produce consistent and linear results. The climatic variability of precipitation is included in the coloured lines whereas the water-stress wedges are simplified straight-line projections.
