Profile

Yvonne van Zeeland graduated as a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with merit at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, the Netherlands in 2004. After working for a short period in a companion animal clinic in the Netherlands she completed an Internship in Companion Animal Medicine at Utrecht University, followed by a Residency in Avian Medicine at the Division of Zoological Medicine. She succesfully finished this residency and passed her board exam in April 2013 to become a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM-Avian) and European recognized specialist in Avian Medicine. In 2014 she furthermore obtained a de facto recognition in the Small mammal Specialty of this same college (ECZM) for her efforts and accomplishments in the small mammal medicine field.

In her daily work, Yvonne deals primarily with exotic species such as birds, small mammals and reptiles. In addition to these clinic-related activites, she is also actively involved in teaching and various research projects. Throughout her carreer, Yvonne not only showed interest in the medical aspects of the profession, but also developed an interest in (parrot) behaviour. These interest led her to become a Tinley and IAABC certified parrot behaviour consultant (2012, 2015). As a member of the Veterinary Behaviour Clinic team in Utrecht she regularly sees and treats parrots with various behaviour problems. From 2009 onwards, she furthermore spent (and spends) a great deal of her time on research into feather damaging behaviour in grey parrots, a project that was part of a larger project concerning welfare in companion animals. After succesfully defending her thesis on June 21, 2013, she obtained a PhD for these graduate studies.

Yvonne van Zeeland was born on August 11, 1978 in Gemert, The Netherlands. After graduating from the Macropedius College in Gemert in 1996, she was admitted to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, The Netherlands. During her studies in Utrecht she entered the Honours Program of the College of Veterinary Medicine (Excellent Tracé). For her studies into “Cellular aspects of iron storage in birds” she received her Master of Veterinary Research (MVR) diploma in 2002. After graduating with merit as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 2004, she worked for a short period in private practice. She then returned to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University where she successfully completed a one-year rotating internship in Companion Animal Medicine at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals. In 2006 she enrolled in the Avian Medicine residency program at the Division of Zoological Medicine, which she later (2009) combined with a PhD study into feather damaging behaviour in Grey parrots. She completed both graduate trainings in 2012, and became an Avian diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) and an EBVS recognized European Veterinary Specialist in Zoological Medicine (Avian medicine) in April 2013. On June 21, 2013, she succesfully defended her thesis "The feather damaging Grey parrot: an analysis of its behaviour and needs" and obtained her PhD. In addition to her activities in the field of avian medicine, Yvonne has also had a strong interest in small mammal medicine and developed various activities in this field throughout her carreer. This activities have subsequently led to her de facto recognition as Diplomate of the ECZM in the Small mammal Specialty in 2014.

Alongside her graduate studies, Yvonne obtained her basic university teaching qualification (BKO) in 2011, and became a Tinley and IAABC certified parrot behaviour consultant in respectively 2012 and 2015. Throughout her career, she won several prizes and awards, including the IAMS/EUKANUBA Award for “Best of class in Nutrition” in 1999, the 1st and 2nd prize of the “Resident and Research Award” of the Dutch Spring Conference (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) in 2005 and 2006, the “Junior teacher award” of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, and the Donald W Zantop Emerging Leader Award (AAV) in 2014.

Yvonne is currently employed at the Division of Zoological Medicine where she devotes her time to research, teaching and patient care with regard to birds, small mammals and other exotics. In her work she not only deals with medical problems but also regularly sees parrots with various behaviour problems. By combining her knowledge of avian behaviour with her medical background Yvonne thrives to come to an optimal treatment plan for parrots with behaviour problems and approaching these both from a medical and behavioural perspective.

Research into etiologie, preventive and therapeutic intervention of feather damaging behaviour in parrots

Feather damaging behavior (FDB), also referred to as feather plucking, feather picking or pterotillomania, is a common behavioural disorder in captive parrots, with an estimated prevalence of 10-15% throughout the parrot population. Birds with FDB either chew, pluck, bite or pull their feathers, thereby inflicting significant damage to their plumage, particularly in the areas that are easily accessible to the beak (i.e., neck, chest, flanks, inner thighs and wings). Although the consequences of this self-inflicted feather damage may be solely  aesthetic, medical issues may also arise due to alterations to the birds’ thermoregulatory abilities and metabolic demands, hemorrhage and/or (secondary) infections. Once parrots display FDB, it is often difficult to break their habit, with treatments generally yielding disappointing results. As a result, parrots with FDB frequently end up being euthanized or relinquished to a shelter or sanctuary.

Similar to stereotypies, FDB may be classified among the abnormal repetitive behaviours (ARBs),which are defined as behaviours that are inappropriate, repetitive and unvarying in either goal or motor pattern. These behaviours often develop in captive animals upon chronic exposure to stressing or aversive stimuli, and/or due to the inability to perform their species-specific behaviours. Parrots in particular appear prone to developing these disorders due to their high-level cognitive abilitiesand the relatively limited time span that they have been bred in captivity which generally classifies them as non-domesticated species. These characteristics often render the captive living environment inadequate to meet the parrots’ social, cognitive and behavioural needs, thereby leading to the development of ARBs and compromising their welfare. In addition to socio-environmental factors of the current living environment, previous life experiences (including rearing methods), and intrinsic factors (e.g., temperament traits and genetic, neurobiologic and neuroendocrine factors) may also play a role.

The research of Yvonne van Zeeland, for which she obtained her PhD in June 2013, aims to gain further insight in the behaviour and needs of (feather damaging) parrots, which may subsequently help to elucidate the pathogenesis and associated (extrinsic and intrinsic) risk factors, and design preventive and therapeutic strategies to reduce the overall occurrence of FDB in the captive parrot population. The studies described in this thesis particularly focus on the Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus), as this appears to be one of the most commonly affected species. In future, results of her studies may, however, also be applicable to other parrot species and help to improve the welfare of these birds.

Other research projects

In addition to this research, Yvonne is also actively involved in larger and smaller research projects into clinically relevant topics in birds and small mammals, including studies into hyperadrenocorticism (adrenal gland disease), blood pressure measurement and welfare of ferrets (the latter as a co-supervisor of PhD student Marsha Reijgwart), development and clinical use of supraglottic airway devices in rabbits and guinea pigs (a collaborative study with DocsInnovent) and studies into nebulization techniques in birds.

Completed projects

Project:
Feather damaging behaviour in Grey parrots: investigations into aetiology, prevention and therapeutic intervention 01.01.2009 to 31.12.2012
General project description

This project, which is part of a larger project concerning welfare issues in companion animals, aims to identify causes and risk factors of feather damaging behaviour, a common behaviour problem in captive parrots. In addition to gaining further knowledge and insight into the aetiologies of this welfare problem the project also aims to design and develop new, effective strategies to prevent and treat feather damaging behaviour.

Since 2009 Yvonne has been a member of the "Line education committee" (LOC) of line 3-4-5 in the Bachelor curriculum of Veterinary Medicine. Within this committee she focuses primarily on line 5, which is the final line in the Bachelor curriculum and focuses on integration of diagnostics and clinical reasoning. This line not only focuses on the theoretical aspects and practical implication of the process of clinical reasoning but also on the various practical skills (clinical and additional diagnostic examination) that students need to develop to further their carreer as a veterinary professional. These skills are tested using the objective structured clinical evaluation (OSCE), which is now firmly embedded into the veterinary curriculum. Yvonne had had an active role in the introduction and further development of this new way of examining students with regard to their clinical skills. Since december 2013 she has furthermore become a member of the Honours programme commitee, which has the task to develop and implement an honours programme in the Bachelor curriculum of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, a programme which will commence in September 2014.

In addition to her role as a coordinator of the line 5 course, Yvonne also is actively involved in the development of new teaching materials on avian and exotic animal medicine, and also teaches on these species during various lectures, masterclasses/workshops and wetlabs within the Bachelor curriculum of Veterinary Medicine, including the courses on respiration, circulation, digestion, reproduction, adaptation and welfare, and lines 2, 3 and 5. In the Master phase, Yvonne's teaching activities comprise of lecturing and training students on avian and exotic animal medicine during various lectures, workshops and courses, as well as daily supervision of residents and students in the clinics during their two-week exotic rotation.

Yvonne is furthermore involved in the Master Environmental Biology, in which she lectures on ethology and behaviour of parrots.

Throughout her carreer as a veterinarian (clinical instructor), researcher and teacher, Yvonne has also supervised various biology and veterinary students in their 3-, 6-, or 9-month research internships and/or the writing of their Master or Bachelor thesis. During her graduate training, she also supervised an honours student (K. van Bokhorst) during her 12-month Excellent track research program regarding behavioural testing in Grey parrots (2010-2011).

Because of her active involvement and participation in the various teaching activities throughout the veterinary curriculumactivities, Yvonnes was nominated for the Faculty's "junior teaching award", a prize which she won in 2012. As a recipient of this award, Yvonne subsequently became a member of the committee that organises the yearly Educational symposium of the Veterinary Faculty ("Onderwijsdag"), which, in 2014, was dedicated to Examination and Entrustable Professional Activities.

Since August 2013 Yvonne is furthermore involved in a project on Blended Learning in medical education, a 2-year project that is financed by the 'Utrechts Stimuleringsfonds Onderwijs' and supervised by Prof. dr. Harold van Rijen. For this project, Yvonne specifically aims to develop, implement and perform research into Blended Learning within the Veterinary curriculum. Since 2015 she furthermore takes part in the project 'Simulation and Gaming'. As part of this team Yvonne is responsible for the development of a game to help the students develop 'clinical reasoning skills'

Additional functions and activities

In addition to her daily activities at Utrecht University, Yvonne has been actively involved in post-graduate trainings of veterinarians and veterinary technicians in the Netherlands and abroad. She has invited as a speaker by various organisations and has given lectures at various (inter)national conferences including the Biotechnical days, DANS, Dutch Wildlife Healh Symposium (DSWH), iViP, IP congress, Dutch Fall conference, Dutch Society for Zoos (NVD), Permanent Education Companion Animals (PEGD), Proveto, Dutch Spring Conference and the European School for the Advancement of Veterinary Studies (ESAVS).

In addition, Yvonne also contributes to the international development and advancement of Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine. Since 2014, she is a member of the Examination Committee of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) and as such contributes to putting together the board exams for future candidates of this College. Yvonne furthermore is the Dutch representative of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and - since 2014 - co-chair of the International Committee of this same organisation, together with her direct colleague Nico Schoemaker.
