Dr. Wen Liu is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University working on the transformation of energy systems towards climate neutrality, with a focus on heat transition and system integration. Her research develops quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches to understand how low-carbon heat technologies, infrastructure, and human behavior interact in complex energy systems.

A central contribution of her work is linking detailed system modeling with real-world constraints, such as behavioral dynamics and infrastructure limitations. This enables more realistic assessments of heat decarbonization pathways and highlights trade-offs between cost, reliability, and emission reduction.

Her academic journey spans China, Denmark, and the Netherlands, where she developed a systems perspective on energy challenges and combines quantitative modeling with behavioral insights. While her teaching connects these approaches to current sustainability challenges. She also contributes to the academic community as a guest editor for Smart Energy and as a member of the Round Table Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Dutch Research Council (NWO), supporting the development and dissemination of emerging research in the field.
