Profile

Wouter van Toll is a lecturer in the Virtual Worlds division of the Department of Information and Computing Sciences (Utrecht University).

He obtained his MSc degree in Game and Media Technology (UU) in 2011. For his Master's thesis, he developed and implemented algorithms for efficient crowd simulation in multi-layered 3D environments.

His PhD track, supervised by dr. Roland Geraerts and prof. dr. Marc van Kreveld, continued along these lines: how can we efficiently steer (many) virtual characters through complex gaming environments? In March 2017, Wouter successfully defended his thesis titled Navigation for Characters and Crowds in Complex Virtual Environments.

Furthermore, Wouter has been in charge of the group's crowd simulation software, which is used both in research and in the simulation industry.
