Tim Immerzeel has been responsible for the development and coordination of the national minor Climate Sociology (for more information click here). Students following this minor, will get a broad and deepening understanding of sociological perspectives on climate change. Tim obtained his master degree (in 2010) and PhD in sociology at Utrecht University (in 2015). In his doctoral dissertation, he studied the mobilizing potential of populist radical right parties in contemporary Western and Eastern European democracies. His main research interests are radical right populism, political participation, climate sociology and the sociology of religion. After his PhD, he was working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Sociology department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, but after 2 years he decided to become a high school teacher in Rotterdam and Utrecht where he taught introductory courses in social sciences. Currently, he combines his passion for teaching and preoccupation with climate change as an education developer and teacher in the department of Sociology at Utrecht University.
In addition to the development and coordination of the national minor, he is co-initiator of the platform Klimaatwijzer, which offers ready-made teaching materials and background information about climate change for teachers of social subjects (social studies, introduction to social sciences) in secondary education.
He is also involved in the KIN-ACT project of the KIN Netherlands. He is part of the work program that focuses on the role that sustainability professionals can take in accelerating climate just transitions.
