I work as an Assistant Professor of Media and Arts Curation at the Department of Media and Culture Studies.
In my research, I pay attention to questions that appear on account of the entanglement of objects, people, spaces, institutions and concepts in curatorial contexts, and I am often part of these constellations myself through practice-based, curatorial research designs. This means that my research outputs include publications as well as curatorial projects in collaboration with artists, institutions and curators. Currently, I am examining the institutional and curatorial consequences as contemporary art institutions become increasingly multi- and interdisciplinary.
Before joining Utrecht University, I was a New Carlsberg Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Aarhus University and Kunsthal Aarhus (DK). During this time, I curated The Timeshare Project (2017) that involved The Real DMZ Project, Starship Magazine, Oda Projesi and SALT, Rond-Point Projects and Eastside Projects, and I commissioned the large-scale curtain installation Host (2019-20) by Céline Condorelli. These projects responded to questions about institutional temporalities and institutionalized conditions of display. Between 2018-2023, I also headed MA in Curating at Aarhus University, an international and interdisciplinary degree programme for practitioners and professionals in the expanded field of curating. Coinciding with the first round of the programme, I organized the public talk series How We Curate at Kunsthal Aarhus (2018-19).
I did my PhD at University of Copenhagen as part of the project LARM Audio Research Archive. My PhD thesis We Can (Not) Work It Out: A Curatorial Inquiry into the Danish Radio Archive (2015) examined the archive through the commission of two artists, Kajsa Dahlberg and Olof Olsson, who engaged with the Danish Radio Archive and produced art works in relation to it. These processes were concluded with the solo exhibition This Time It’s Political by Dahlberg at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde (DK) and the performance tour DR P3 1963-2013. 50 Years of Danish State Authorised Pop Radio by Olsson, both of which I curated. In my thesis, I not only investigated the archival interventions that the artworks produced, I also developed and conceptualised the act of commissioning as a curatorial mode of inquiry.
My educational background is in Comparative Literature and Modern Culture & Cultural Dissemination. For a number of years, I worked as an “independent” curator and held temporary jobs as assistant curator, radio producer and production assistant before starting my PhD. Both in my research and teaching, I am invested in narrowing the gap between practice and theory and cultivating the exchanges between knowing, doing and making.
