Salvo Nicolosi is a tenured Senior Assistant Professor in European and International Law at Utrecht University Law School, where he assumes various leadership positions. In particular, he leads the Building block on Citizenship and Migration within the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE) and coordinates the LL.M. programme in European Law. Salvo is also a Fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and a Member of the Steering Committee of the Utrecht Focus Area on Migration and Societal Change and an active member of the Utrecht Centre for Global Challenges (especially within the MIGROBAL project). Salvo has been also appointed as Senior Research Associate at the Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context of Ghent University (Belgium), as Research Affiliate of the Refugee Law Initiative, University of London, United Kingdom, and has been included in the List of legal experts of the EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA).
Before joining Utrecht University, Salvo worked as a Senior Researcher at the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University, where he was the Principal Investigator of the research project on the Common European Asylum System and its degree of compliance with International Human Rights Standards. In the ambit of his research, Salvo was awarded the prestigious EU Fulbright-Schuman Fellowship spent as a Michigan Grotius Research Scholar at the Center for International and Comparative Law and the Program on Refugee and Asylum Law at Michigan University Law School.
Salvo defended his PhD at La Sapienza University of Rome and his research combines expertise in the domains of European law, international human rights law and international refugee law, with particular attention to the development of the Common European Asylum System. He examines the EU institutional, law-making and enforcement dynamics in the context of asylum and migration and the relationship between the EU asylum legislation and the main international human rights legal instruments, including the 1951 Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees and the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights.
Salvo is generally interested in topics related to EU constitutional law, EU citizenship, free movement and fundamental rights, institutional matters in the EU and international organizations, interactions between international law and the EU legal order, regional systems of human rights protection. In these areas, he co-supervise three PhD projects.
Salvo Nicolosi has been serving as Adjunct Professor of European Law and European Migration Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and University of Catania (Italy) and has been Visiting Professor at Osaka University (Japan), the University of Turku (Finland), the University of Deusto (Spain), the University of Lille (France), the University of Teramo (Italy). He was previously awarded a fellowship by the Flemish Community of Belgium to pursue research at the Centre for Global Governance Studies of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and also acted as Legislative Assistant and Policy Intern at the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU (DG Justice and Home Affairs).
Salvo is the author of several publications in the broad areas of European and international law.
In his spare time Salvo enjoys drawing and writing poems and he is table football enthusiast and loves photography while travelling and living in different parts of Europe and the world.
